If you are planning on updating your DNS as part of your headless build, we’ve compiled some considerations for you.
DNS Propagation time (Shopify)
If you are changing the DNS settings for your Shopify-managed domain, these can take up to 24 hours to take effect. Read more about this on Shopify.
Updating TTL 1-week Prior to Go-Live
It is recommended to update the DNS records TTL to 600 seconds a week prior to go-live for both the A records and CNAMEs that resolve to your current front-end. This can be done in your GoDaddy or similar account. If the TTL is set too high, certain people during the go-live may still get routed to the old site until the networks catch up.
Shopify & GoDaddy Domain Management
If you have previously connected your Shopify & GoDaddy account, you may be unable to edit or delete the A or CNAME in your GoDaddy account. In this instance, removing the domain from Shopify will not remove the Shopify records in GoDaddy. Right now, it is recommended to reach out to GoDaddy customer service to remove the A & CNAME records, as the merchant does not have the ability to do so any longer. With a Google search, you may see threads like this one referencing a “Manage Connections” tab, but that function is no longer available.
